President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has expressed confidence in the ability of Fayyaz Ismail to lead the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) in the right direction as the newly elected Chairperson of the party.
Fayyaz, who is part of President Solih’s cabinet as the Minister of Economic Development, was elected as the new Chairperson of MDP during the party’s internal elections held on May 14. He won the election with 58% of the votes, ahead of Parliamentarian Imthiyaz Fahmy who won 42% of the votes.
In a tweet, President Solih congratulated Fayyaz on the election victory and expressed confidence that MDP will move forward in the right direction ahead of next year’s presidential elections, under the administrative leadership of Fayyaz.
Meanwhile, President of MDP and Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed had also congratulated Fayyaz on winning the chairperson election, stating he has no doubt that MDP will achieve further success with Fayyaz as chairperson.
The MDP chairperson election was the most competitive internal election of the party’s history. The election was held following a fierce campaign by the two candidates and their teams.
