Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) has officially announced the victory of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) in the by-election for the vacant seat of Villimale’ in the Male’ City Women’s Development Committee (WDC).
PPM’s Fathimath Nazima won the by-election with 359 votes, just one vote ahead of Maldives National Party (MNP)’s candidate Aminath Sheeza, who received 358 votes. Following the by-election, MNP requested a recount of the ballots to confirm the result.
After reviewing MNP’s request, ECM decided to recount two ballots which received complaints during the vote. However, after recounting the two ballots, ECM stated there is no issue that would lead to a change of results. Therefore, the commission announced PPM’s Fathimath Nazima has won the Villimale’ seat of Male’ City WDC.
The seat representing the Villimale’ constituency at the WDC was vacated following the passing away of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) member Aminath Eman in February.
