Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure has contracted Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) to undertake the harbour development and shore protection project in Thakandhoo, Haa Alifu Atoll.
The contract for the project was signed during a special ceremony held on May 16. The contract was signed by Permanent Secretary Zeeniya Ahmed Hameed and CEO of MTCC Adam Azim.
Scope of works for the project include harbour dredging operations of 4,455cbm and channel dredging of 2,230m, construction of a 252m breakwater, 126m groynes, a 160m revetment, installation of 883sqm harbour pavement, installation of harbour lights, installation of navigational lights and installation of mooring bollards. The total value of the project is USD1.45 million.
The project is expected to resolve the difficulties faced by the residents of Thakandhoo in using its current harbour, as well as the address the concerns related to erosion and the waterflow in the mangrove area of the island.
