The Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has won the by-election for the vacant Villimale’ seat on the Women’s Development Committee (WDC) of Male’ City.
PPM member Fathimath Nazima won with 359 votes, defeating Maldives National Party (MNP) member Aminath Shiza, who received 358 votes. Following the results, MNP stated it will be requesting a recount of the ballots.
The voters’ list shows that 2,900 individuals were eligible to vote in the by-election. A total of six ballot boxes were placed at Muhyiddin School in Villimale’ during the by-election. Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) decided not to place ballot boxes in Male’ and Hulhumale’ due to the low number of individuals who registered to vote in these areas.
The seat representing the Villimale’ constituency at the WDC was vacated following the passing away of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) member Aminath Eman in February. MDP decided to contest the by-election but lost its chance after submitting the application for candidacy after the deadline.
