Fisheries ministry place FADs in three areas

Ministry of Fisheries, Marine Resources and Agriculture has placed Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) in three new areas.

The new FADs were placed 4.5 miles north of Kaashidhoo in Kaafu Atoll, nine miles north of Vilufushi in Thaa Atoll, and eight miles southeast of Gaadhiffushi in Thaa Atoll. The ministry revealed a special number has been given to identifying the FADs and that it is the first time FADs were placed in these areas.

Generally, FADs are placed to reduce the cost of fisheries in the Maldives. In this regard, the fisheries ministry aims to expand the FADs network to reduce fisheries expenses.

FADs are anchored or drifting objects that are placed in the ocean to attract fish.
