Minister of Education Dr. Aishath Ali has stated the improved wages announced for teachers will help to retain good quality teachers in the education sector. She made the remarks in a press conference held after President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih announced teachers will be receiving wage increments effective from May 1.
Speaking at the press conference, Education Minister Dr. Aishath Ali stated teachers had not previously been receiving a suitable compensation for their hard work and dedication. The minister noted a recent study conducted into the education sector had revealed educated and capable young people are hesitant to pursue teaching careers due to low wages. However, she expressed confidence the newly announced changes will help encourage more people to the profession and retain good quality teachers in the education sector.
With the changes brought to the wage structure of the education sector, teachers will receive 56% increment to their current wages. Meanwhile, Rank 1 Principals will receive an 82% increment and Rank 2 Principals will receive a 59% increment.
In a televised address on May 1, President Solih said this marks a significant step in the administration’s commitment to ensuring better wages for all in the workforce that contribute toward national progress.
