MIFCO lifts control placed on fish purchasing

Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company Limited (MIFCO) has lifted the control placed on fish purchasing.

MIFCO began controlling the fish purchases due to the overload of fish carrying and processing capacity, which was caused by the high number of fish being caught in the southern region. However, the company has now lifted the control and begun purchasing fish without limit.

Furthermore, MIFCO stated that it has purchased more fish this year than in the same period last year, despite limiting fish processing to seven tonnes per boat. The company stated that it continues to provide the best services and expressed its appreciation for the support given by fishermen.

The government has been working to increase the cold storage capacity due to the high number of fish being caught in the Maldives. The work includes building a 9,500-tonne storage facility and upgrading the Felivaru Fisheries Complex.
