Maldives condemns violence in Jerusalem

The Maldives strongly condemned the violence in al-Haram al-Sharif and the Al-Aqsa Compound in Jerusalem.

In a statement at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) meeting, the Maldives stated that the actions of Israeli forces are violating the rights of Palestinians and that the recent violent incidents show the need to fast-track its work to come to a peaceful resolution to the conflict and for the UNSC to implement its resolutions.

Also in the statement, the Maldives highlighted that the UNSC has publicised resolutions against Israel’s attempts to capture Palestinian land and against countries establishing their embassies in Jerusalem, as it is not internationally recognised as the capital of Israel. It also noted that the UNSC passed the resolution to not recognise land that Israel has captured since 1967.

Therefore, the Maldives urged the UNSC to implement its resolutions and reiterated its support for an independent and sovereign State of Palestine, based on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.
