High Court Judge Mohamed Niyaz has been appointed to the Judicial Service Commission (JSC). He was appointed under Article 158 of the Constitution of the Maldives, to represent the High Court at the JSC.
Judge Niyaz achieved a higher education at International Islamic University Malaysia and was appointed to the High Court of the Maldives in January 2018. He previously served as the Chief Magistrate at the Haa Dhaalu Atoll Judicial District, and as a Magistrate at the Vaikaradhoo Court. He also worked as a Legal Assistant at the Ministry of Justice.
JSC is an independent and impartial institution that is tasked with investigating complaints against judges and issue disciplinary action against them, including recommendations for dismissal The commission is also tasked with appointing, promoting, and transferring judges other than the chief justice and judges of the Supreme Court, and to make recommendations on the appointment of the chief justice and judges of the Supreme Court.
JSC is composed of nine members including the speaker of parliament, the president of the Civil Service Commission (CSC), the attorney general, and representative judges from the Supreme Court, the High Court, and lower courts, as well as representatives from the president, the parliament and the public.
