Request to be made to extend the runway of Faresmaathoda Airport

Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll Council has decided to submit a request to the government to extend the runway of the Faresmaathoda Airport which is currently under development.

Development of Faresmaathoda Airport was contracted to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) in late 2020. The airport is being developed in a reclaimed area of 19.9 hectares which links the small islands in the lagoon of Faresmaathoda in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll. The airport is being developed with a 1,200m runway, taxiway and apron, along with a terminal building, fire station and other facilities.

Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll Council revealed the members of the council have decided to submit a request to extend the runway of the airport to 1,800m. However, the reason for this request has not been disclosed.

Faresmaathoda Airport is being developed to cater to domestic flights. MTCC was contracted to complete the project at a cost of about USD10 million. The project is on schedule to be completed by July this year.
