The Government of Maldives has welcomed the establishment of the Presidential Leadership Council in Yemen.
The Presidential Leadership Council was established to complete the implementation of the tasks of the transitional period in Yemen, and delegate it to the full powers of the president, in accordance with the Yemeni constitution, the Gulf initiative, and its executive mechanisms.
In a press statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Government of Maldives stated it affirms its full support for the Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council to undertake the duties entrusted to the council in establishing an effective, democratic and transparent government. The Maldives also expressed its hope that this important development would contribute to reaching a comprehensive political solution between the Yemeni parties towards the attainment of peace, stability, growth, and prosperity for its people.
President of Yemen Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi delegated his powers to the presidential council after Yemen’s warring sides agreed to a truce, amid efforts led by the United Nations (UN) to end the seven-year war. The civil war began in 2014 mainly between the Yemeni government and the Houthi armed rebels. The newly formed eight-member council replaces the president and vice president and stated that it aims to end the civil war and establish peace in Yemen.
