India Out campaign driven by personal agendas: Deputy Speaker

Deputy Speaker of Parliament Eva Abdulla has stated the India Out campaign led by the opposition is driven by personal agendas of certain individuals. She made the remarks while speaking on the emergency motion submitted by Parliamentarian Abdulla Jabir calling for the independence and sovereignty of the country to be protected.

Speaking on the motion, Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla said India has always been the closest bilateral partner of the Maldives, assisting the country in times of need and supporting the development of the country over many decades. The deputy speaker said the India Out campaign is conducted to achieve certain political and financial benefits for some leading individuals of the opposition. She added the campaign is a threat to national security and called for immediate action to stop the campaign.

During the deliberations on the emergency motion, most parliamentarians condemned the India Out campaign, highlighting the close bilateral ties between the Maldives and India. They called for urgent action to prevent the campaign from compromising national security.

The India Out campaign by the opposition has drawn strong condemnation from the main ruling party Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) as well as other parties in the government coalition. The Parliamentary Committee on National Security Services has also carried out an inquiry into the effects and possible consequences of the campaign.
