Highest Green Tax collected from Kaafu, Alifu Dhaalu Atolls

Ministry of Finance has revealed the state received the highest amount in Green Tax from Kaafu Atoll and Alifu Dhaalu Atoll last January.

The latest Green Fund Report published by the finance ministry shows the state received USD6.2 million from Green Tax collection in January, of which USD2 million was collected from Kaafu Atoll and USD615,000 was collected from Alifu Dhaalu Atoll. USD1.9 million of the Green Tax from Kaafu Atoll was collected from resorts while the rest was collected from guesthouses.
The least amount of Green Tax was collected from Fuvahmulah City with around USD400, while USD22,000 was collected from Thaa Atoll, and USD25,000 was collected from Faafu Atoll.

The Green Fund was introduced in 2016 with the aim of tackling environmental issues in the Maldives as per the Tourism Act of the Maldives. As such, USD6 is charged as Green Tax per tourist for each day they spend at a resort or a hotel in the Maldives, while USD3 is charged as Green Tax per tourist for each day they stay at a guesthouse.
