Minister of Tourism Dr. Abdulla Mausoom has stated islands have many opportunities to attract tourists by showcasing their unique beauty. He made the remarks in his speech at a ceremony held to inaugurate the 50th guesthouse to come into operation in Thoddoo, Alifu Alifu Atoll.
At the event, Minister Mausoom said 22% of revenue from the tourism sector comes from non-resort establishments, and that local tourism businesses are currently operating in 92 islands. The minister said local tourism can be expanded by marketing the culture, landmarks, and local activities that are unique to each island.
Additionally, Minister Mausoom said local tourism needs more participation from women, and tourism establishments should benefit the entire local community and not just the owner. He highlighted that the increase in popularity of local tourism establishments also allows other businesses on the island to generate more revenue.
Minister Mausoom also said tourism in the Maldives is vulnerable to the global economic crisis, but businesses and organisations can work together to overcome such challenges, while also participating in healthy competition. He also urged stakeholders to maintain the renown the Maldives has gained as a popular tourist destination.
